Another day, another mecca of mediocrity
So, I see the news. A new EōS Fitness just opened its doors in Plano, Texas. Their third one, in fact. The article in Plano Magazine breathlessly lists its features - it’s open 24/7, has an indoor pool, and memberships start at a measly $9.99 per month. Wow. Groundbreaking. Forgive me if I don't start cartwheeling with excitement. Because when I dig into the real selling points, I have to wonder if these new mega-gyms are fitness centers or adult daycare facilities. 🤔
Let’s break down these “innovative” amenities, shall we?
The distraction factory
First up, the “MOVEōS Cinema,” where you can apparently “watch movies while on cardio equipment.” Oh, fantastic. Let me ask you something. When you’re truly pushing yourself- gasping for air, sweat stinging your eyes, chasing a new personal best- do you have the mental capacity to follow the plot of a rom-com? No. The answer is no.
Cardio that’s effective enough to create real change is uncomfortable. It’s hard work. If you can comfortably watch a movie, you’re not doing cardio, you’re just… moving. Barely. It’s a feature designed to make you feel like you’re working out while you're actually just avoiding the effort. It’s the illusion of fitness, and frankly, I’m insulted on your behalf.
For the 'Gram, not the gains
Then we have “The Set,” which the article describes as “a designated workout area for content creators.” I had to read that twice. A special zone, not for lifting heavy or perfecting form, but for getting the perfect shot for your social media feed. Look, I get it, we all want to look good. But when the gym’s primary marketing includes a space dedicated to performing fitness instead of doing it, we've got a problem. The focus shifts from internal progress to external validation.
Your muscles don't grow from flattering lighting. Your endurance doesn't increase because you found the perfect angle for your bicep flex. This isn’t a photo studio. This is supposed to be where you forge a stronger version of yourself, not a more popular online persona.
