I’ve gotta admit, for years I totally neglected my ankles. I was all about the big lifts- squats, deadlifts, you name it. I figured as long as my legs were strong, the little joints at the bottom would just figure themselves out.
Wrong. So, so wrong.
It wasn't until I kept hitting a wall with my squat depth- literally, my heels would pop up and I’d pitch forward- that I realized the problem wasn't my hips or my back. It was my ankles. They were stiff as a board. That was my wake-up call, and it’s why I’m so passionate about athlete ankle health now.
Why Your Ankles Are Everything
Think of your body like a tower of blocks. If the bottom block- your feet and ankles- is unstable or crooked, the whole tower is compromised. That’s the kinetic chain in action. Poor ankle mobility can lead to a whole host of issues up the line - knee pain, hip impingement, and even lower back pain.
For anyone who lifts, runs, or plays sports, this is huge. Stiff ankles are a major risk factor when it comes to injuries. They can make it way easier to roll and prevent ankle sprains from being a thing of the past. And if you’re like I was, struggling to improve squat depth, there’s a very good chance your ankles are the culprit. You need good dorsiflexion- the ability to bring your toes toward your shins- to allow your knees to travel forward over your feet in a deep squat. Without it, your body has to compensate, and that's when things get messy.
The Quick Test: How's Your Mobility?
Not sure where you stand? Here's a super simple test you can do right now.
Find a wall and get into a half-kneeling position facing it. Place your front foot about a fist's-width away from the wall. Now, keeping your heel flat on the floor, try to touch your knee to the wall.
- •If you can touch it easily, move back a little and try again.
- •If you can't touch it without your heel lifting, your ankle mobility needs some work.
This simple test gives you a clear baseline. Don't feel bad if you failed- most people do! The good news is, it’s highly fixable.
