The Best Cool Down Stretches After Your Workout Routine

You just crushed your workout. The endorphins are pumping, you’re covered in sweat, and the only thing you want to do is collapse on the couch. I get it. But hold on for just five more minutes.

In my years of coaching, the single most-skipped part of a workout is the cool down. People see it as optional, but as a trainer, I see it as essential. Think of it this way - your workout is the stress, and your cool down is the “thank you” note you write to your body. It’s the first and most important step toward recovery.

Why Bother with a Cool Down, Really?

So why am I so insistent on this? It’s not just about feeling good. A proper cool down has real physiological benefits.

When you work out hard, your heart is pumping fast to get blood and oxygen to your muscles. If you stop abruptly, your heart rate plummets, but your blood vessels are still wide open. This can cause blood to pool in your lower extremities, making you feel dizzy or lightheaded.

A gradual cool down allows your heart rate and blood pressure to return to normal slowly and safely. It signals to your body that the work is done and it's time to kickstart the repair process. This is where post workout stretching comes in.

Static vs. Dynamic: The Right Stretch at the Right Time

One thing I constantly correct new clients on is the type of stretching they do. You’ve probably seen people doing leg swings or arm circles before a run. Those are dynamic stretches - active movements designed to warm up muscles and increase blood flow before a workout.

After your workout, you want to focus on static stretches. This is where you hold a stretch in a single position for a period of time, usually 20-30 seconds. Your muscles are warm and pliable post-workout, making it the perfect time to work on lengthening them and improving your overall flexibility. This is the core of a good flexibility cool down.

Doing static stretches on cold muscles (like before a workout) can actually increase your risk of injury. So, dynamic for warm-ups, static for cool downs. Got it? Good.

Alright, let's get to the good stuff. This is a simple but incredibly effective routine that hits all the major muscle groups. Aim to hold each stretch for 20-30 seconds, and remember to breathe deeply. Never stretch into sharp pain- find the point of tension and hold it there.

Just like your FullBody AI workout plan is customized for you, your cool down should address the muscles you just worked. Feel free to spend more time on areas that feel particularly tight.

    Lower Body Focus

    • •Standing Quad Stretch - stand near a wall for balance. Grab your left foot with your left hand and gently pull your heel toward your glute. Keep your knees together and your hips pushed slightly forward. You should feel this in the front of your thigh. Repeat on the other side.
    • •Seated Hamstring Stretch - sit on the floor with one leg extended straight out and the other bent with the sole of your foot against your inner thigh. Gently hinge at your hips and lean forward over the straight leg until you feel a stretch in the back of your thigh. Don't round your back!
    • •Pigeon Pose - this is a lifesaver for tight hips and glutes. Start on all fours, then bring your right knee forward and place it behind your right wrist. Angle your right shin so your right foot is near your left hip. Slide your left leg back, keeping your hips square. You can stay propped up on your hands or fold forward for a deeper stretch.

    Upper Body & Core Relief

    • •Doorway Chest Stretch - stand in a doorway and place your forearms on the frame, with your elbows just below shoulder height. Step forward with one foot until you feel a good stretch across your chest. This is fantastic after any pressing movements like push-ups or bench press.
    • •Cross-Body Shoulder Stretch - bring your right arm straight across your body. Use your left hand to gently pull your right arm closer to your chest. Feel the stretch in your shoulder, not your elbow joint. Repeat on the other side.
    • •Child's Pose - a classic for a reason. Kneel on the floor, sit back on your heels, and fold forward, resting your forehead on the floor and extending your arms out in front of you. This is one of the best static stretches for recovery, as it gently stretches your back, hips, and shoulders while promoting relaxation.

Making Your Cool Down a Habit

What I tell my clients is that consistency beats intensity every time. A 5-minute cool down after every single workout is far better than a 20-minute session once a month.

It’s the final step in a complete fitness session. You wouldn't skip the last rep of your set, so don't skip your cool down. Put on a calming song, focus on your breath, and give your body the care it deserves. Your future self will thank you. 👍
